The voluntary bone marrow donor is registered in the Italian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (IBMDR) whose headquarters are in Genoa. The IBMR has identified the National Register for Lazio in the Medical Genetics Laboratory of the S. Camillo Forlanini Hospital.
Anyone who is in good health and between the ages of 18 and 35, undergoing a blood sample from the arm to ascertain suitability for donation and the study of histocompatibility antigens, can become a potential bone marrow donor and remain on the list up to 55 years of age.
The generic data of the registered donors are stored in the SW of the IBMDR, which currently has over 350,000 Italian donors among which, if there is a haematological patient without a compatible family member, a possible voluntary donor can be sought.
After a series of successive steps, aimed at an ever greater deepening of the compatibility between patient and donor, we proceed with the possible collection of hematopoietic stem cells from the iliac crests of the pelvis or by means of leukapheresis. The harvested bone marrow reproduces rapidly and is reconstituted within a few days of harvesting.
